　　清朝末期，雕刻精美、描繪華麗的折扇大量在中國廣東生產，后被西方商人青睞。運往歐洲和美國后成為西方貴婦的重要時尚配件(accessories)。中國折扇的材質多為鏤雕精巧的象牙、珍珠貝殼、漆木(lacquer)。扇面上描繪了眾多清朝官員及夫人的形象。因為具有神秘的東方情調，當時西方中上層貴婦人手一把，以此來炫耀自己的財富和高貴。

　　Chinese Fans

　　During the late Qing Dynasty, a large number ofChinese fans exquisitely carved and gorgeouslypainted were produced in Canton (now called Guangdong). These fans later were in good graces ofwestern merchants. After they were shipped to Europe and America, they became fashionableaccessories for noblewomen. The materials used to make Chinese fans were mostly exquisitelycarved ivory, pearls and shells and lacquer. These Chinese fans showed many figures ofMandarins and their consorts. Mysterious oriental sentiment as they presented, each lady inupper-middle class family at that time owned a Chinese fan to show off her wealth and nobility.

　　1.雕刻精美、描繪華麗:“精美”可譯為exquisitely; “華麗”可譯為gorgeously;這兩個詞都不常用，也可以用beautifully一詞表達。

　　2.被…青睞:可譯為 find favour in one's eyes 或 be ingood graces of,屬固定表達。

　　3.運往:譯此詞時需注意到19世紀的主要運輸工具是船運，所以最好用ship。

　　4.成為西方貴婦的重要時尚配件:運往歐洲自然是提供給“西方”貴婦，英譯時不必再譯出western;配件為accessories,注意該詞的拼寫。

　　5.清朝官員:可直譯為Qin officials。但在英語中也可以用Mandarin來表示舊中國的官員。

　　6.夫人:在書面語中表達“夫人”用consort比wife要更正式一些。

　　7.情調:指“情感體驗”，可譯為sentiment或者sentimental tone。
